Somali Canadian Seniors Program
As our population ages and the demographics demonstrate the number of immigrant seniors in Edmonton has become increasingly apparent that we need to be more inclusive of seniors in addressing community concerns, particularly the legal and social issues facing immigrant youth in the city of Edmonton.  SCERDO's project aims to develop a culturally competent project that engages immigrant seniors, mainly Somalis who live in Edmonton and its surrounding areas

Project Description:

The Somali Canadian Seniors program identifies, and links Somali seniors to services that support their independence such as; help with their daily living, accessible and affordable transportation, opportunities for recreation and socialization, individual care and firsthand information about seniors programs in Edmonton.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Increasing Somali senior’s services and programs in Edmonton.
  • Developing a strong sense of community connection and awareness
  • Decreasing negative, racial and cultural stereotypes faced by immigrant seniors
  • Increasing the integration of marginalized seniors within the fabric of Canada’s multicultural society.

The Somali Canadian Seniors program facilitates a venue for seniors from the community to gather and socialize among other seniors in an inclusive, safe, and culturally appropriate environment with a 24 hrs “help line” for seniors. This service will offer an effective way to provide callers with accurate information, support, and referrals to appropriate service providers, community-based services and resources including in-home support if necessary.

Seniors are able to do many more things on their own once they receive support in their communities. They become more active and know who to turn to for help when needed.
